How to Work With Your Natural Creative Rhythm

In my past Sunday Letter, I shared a reflection on the natural ebb and flow of creative inspiration. This week, I want to take you deeper by giving you actionable steps to work with these cycles. The first step is to recognize the rhythm.

Understanding Your Creative Flow

Some days, ideas pour out effortlessly; other days, the well of inspiration feels empty. Both states can be purposeful:
  • Overflow moments: These are the days when your mind is brimming with ideas. Capture everything: use a notebook, voice memo, or photos.
  • Stillness moments: These are the quieter days, when inspiration seems scarce. This is a time to rest, reflect and be present.
Recognizing these patterns allows you to stop resisting the ebb and flow and instead work with your natural creative rhythm.

Why Awareness Matters

We often try to force productivity during stillness, and many of us fear “wasted” time. But the truth is: growth and insight often emerge during quiet moments. The overflow gives you energy and ideas; the stillness gives you clarity and perspective. Together, they form a cycle that propels your creativity forward.

Creative Cycles Journal: Track Your Rhythm

Here’s a way to start noticing your creative cycles:
Each day, note how you feel creatively:
  • Overflow: ideas are abundant, energy is high
  • Stillness: quiet, reflective, low inspiration
Questions to Reflect On as You Track Your Creative Rhythm:
1. Are there particular times of day when you feel more inspired?
2. When do you feel creatively stagnant or drained?
3. What activities, environments, or people seem to spark your ideas?
